A canvas duffel that stays open while you pack. It fits the US carry-on guideline, so it works for a weekend away or a short work trip.

For the guy with a fat leather wallet he keeps meaning to replace. It forces you down to the cards you actually use.

Merino hiking socks are one of those things people don't buy for themselves. Three pairs means they're not saving them for best.

Made in Maine; L.L.Bean says to order a full size down from your usual shoe size. $150 when we checked.
The classic duck boot for slush, mud and walking the dog. Do read L.L.Bean's sizing note before ordering, because most people get it wrong the first time.
Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L
19.7 × 12.5 × 8.5 in; 1,045 g; Patagonia says it fits most airline carry-on requirements. $165 when we checked.
The bag that ends up in the truck, at the gym and in the overhead bin. A safe pick if you don't know his clothing size.
Barbour Transport Wax Jacket (Bespoke Post)
6 oz waxed cotton with a cord collar, tartan lining and an inner storm skirt, in a roomier, more modern cut. $425 when we checked.
The big one. A Barbour gets better with age and can be re-waxed for years. Bespoke Post calls it water-resistant, not waterproof, so it's a jacket for drizzle and wind rather than a downpour.
A few buying tips
- Sizing: boots and jackets are the gifts most likely to go back. L.L.Bean's Bean Boots run big, and Barbour cuts vary by style, so check the size guide on the product page.
- Socks and base layers are safe bets. Merino is easy to size and gets worn all winter.
- Bespoke Post sells single items too. You don't need a subscription to buy from its store.
Questions
Is a Barbour wax jacket waterproof?
Not fully. Bespoke Post describes the Barbour Transport as water-resistant: waxed cotton sheds drizzle and wind well, and it can be re-waxed to keep it that way. For a real downpour, a modern waterproof shell is drier.
How do Bean Boots fit?
Big. L.L.Bean's own product page says to order a full size down from your usual shoe size, and to go by the sizing advice there rather than guessing. If you're buying as a surprise, a gift receipt helps.
What's a good outdoorsy gift under $100?
