45% merino wool with cushioning underfoot; kids' shoe sizes 9–6. $20 when we checked.
A stocking stuffer that gets used. Warm, dry feet make a long day of sightseeing a lot less whiny.
8.75 × 3.5 × 6.75 in; 0.68 lb; water-resistant polyester; hanging loop; reusable liquids pouch included. $48 when we checked.
Hangs on the back of a hotel door, and the clear liquids pouch pulls out at security without unpacking everything else.
Origami-style inner pockets, elastic loops, a clamshell opening and an outside zip pocket with a cable pass-through, per Peak Design. $49.95 (Small) or $59.95 (Regular) when we checked.
For the person whose chargers, cables and battery packs end up loose at the bottom of every bag. The Small fits brick-style chargers and is the easier one to tuck into a backpack.
Small: 4.5–9 L, 110 g; Medium: 8–18 L, 144 g; both compress to 8 cm deep, per Peak Design. $39.95 (Small) to $49.95 (Large) when we checked.
A zip squeezes soft clothes flat. One cube per family member keeps a shared suitcase from turning into a pile.
20 L everyday pack with a large panel-loading main compartment, per Osprey. $80 when we checked.
A plain, simple daypack for a day of walking around a city. Panel loading means it unzips wide, so nobody has to dig for the snacks.
7 L; about 29 × 20 × 13 cm; about 220 g. $85 when we checked.
A kid-sized version of the classic. Small enough for any airline's free under-seat bag and light enough for a five-year-old to carry their own stuff.
16 L; 36 × 27.5 × 12 cm; 300 g; Vinylon F fabric; removable seat pad; reflective logo, per Fjällräven. $95 when we checked.
The square Swedish backpack, in dozens of colors. It's light, the fabric shrugs off dirt and rain, and there's a foam seat pad tucked in the back for sitting on damp benches.
Leather, RFID-protected; holds a passport, 4 to 10+ cards, cash, tickets and a Micro Pen. $145 when we checked.
Keeps passports, boarding passes and a pen for landing cards in one place. Bellroy says it fits most passports, though not German or Irish ones.
19.7 × 12.5 × 8.5 in; 1,045 g; Patagonia says it fits most airline carry-on requirements. $165 when we checked.
A soft duffel that goes from the car trunk to the overhead bin. On Patagonia's listed size it's inside the 22 × 14 × 9 in US carry-on guideline.
22 × 12 × 10 in; 2 lb 15 oz; water-resistant TPU-coated shell. $230 when we checked.
A backpack that opens like a suitcase. Handy for the parent who also has a stroller to push. It's 10 in deep, so don't overstuff it if the airline sizer is 9 in.
German Makrolon polycarbonate shell; exterior 22.5 × 14.5 × 9 in, interior 20.5 × 14 in, per Ridge. $295 when we checked.
A hard-shell case with a lifetime warranty. The listed size is half an inch over the 22 × 14 in US guideline on two sides, so it's worth measuring against the airline's sizer.
Planning a trip as part of the gift? The Family Travel with Kids Planner covers passports, a jet-lag plan, packing by age and the budget.

On the makers' listed sizes, the Patagonia Black Hole 40L (19.7 × 12.5 × 8.5 in) fits inside the 22 × 14 × 9 in guideline most US airlines use. The Osprey Daylite Plus and the Kånken are daypacks, so they're the second bag that goes under the seat (check the airline's personal-item size). The Ridge Carry-On is listed at 22.5 × 14.5 × 9 in and the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L is 10 in deep, so both are slightly over on paper. Europe's budget airlines are much stricter: check the airline before you fly.
Merino socks ($20 for kids' Darn Tough), a Peak Design packing cube (from $39.95), the Small Tech Pouch ($49.95) or the Halfday toiletry kit ($48). They're all things people use on every trip and rarely buy for themselves.
Their own backpack. The Kånken Mini ($85) is small enough for any airline's free under-seat bag, and carrying their own snacks and toys gives kids a job on travel day.
They're what each retailer's own page showed on 23 October 2026. Holiday sales move prices up and down, sometimes daily, so the retailer's page is the final word. If something here looks wrong, it's probably changed since we checked.
Some are. If you buy through a product link we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change the price you pay or which products we pick, and nobody paid to be on these lists.
