A warm layer for stroller walks and winter errands. One of the few baby clothes that gets used all season.
16 × 8 × 14 in; insulated bottle pockets, a changing pad and stroller straps. $78.99 when we checked.
A backpack keeps both hands free, and that matters more than any feature list. Neutral enough that either parent will carry it.
Sound machine and night light; includes 3 months of Hatch+; no backup battery, so it needs to stay plugged in. $79.99 when we checked.
White noise and a dim light for the middle-of-the-night feeds.
NoseFrida the SnotSucker, Windi gas passers, a medicine pacifier, a rectal thermometer, nail clippers, a hairbrush and comb, a finger toothbrush, a teether and a case. $99.99 when we checked.
Not glamorous. Everyone ends up buying most of this at 2 a.m. anyway, so it's a kind gift.
7 to 45 lb; four carry positions; machine washable. $219 when we checked.
A carrier from the newborn weeks to toddlerhood. Great for airports, cobbled streets and anywhere a stroller is a pain.
13.7 lb; folds to 52 × 44 × 18 cm (20.5 × 17.3 × 7.1 in); from 6 months to 48.5 lb with the 6+ seat. $399.20 on sale (regular $499) when we checked.
A small-fold travel stroller built for planes, buses and trains. The 6+ version is for babies who can sit up, so it's a gift for a family that's past the newborn stage.
17.7 lb; folds to 21.5 × 18 × 10 in; from birth to 50 lb; car seat adapter, cup holder and carry bag included. $399 when we checked.
Good value from birth, with the adapter and bag already in the box rather than sold as extras.
7.69 lb (3.48 kg); 24 L of storage; maximum total load 48.5 lb (22 kg) including child and gear. $400 when we checked.
A framed hiking carrier for later on (Osprey lists a minimum total load of 23.7 lb, so it's not for newborns). A gift for outdoorsy parents who want to keep doing the trails.
28 lb as a single, 36 lb with the second seat; 34 × 26 × 18 in folded. $549 when we checked.
An everyday stroller that grows into a double when a sibling arrives. It's full-size, so it lives in the car trunk rather than the plane.
14.6 lb without canopy and armbar; folds to 27 × 21 × 14.25 in; from birth to 50 lb. $600 when we checked.
Our stroller guide's pick for naps on the go, and suitable from birth. A nice one for parents who'll travel a lot.
19.6 lb; folds to 17.3 × 28.5 × 18 in; infant car seat for babies up to 30 lb and 17–32 in. $850 when we checked.
An infant car seat with wheels that fold out. Brilliant for taxis and quick errands. Babies outgrow it at 30 lb or 32 in, so it's a splurge for the first year or so.
Expecting parents planning a first trip with the baby? The Family Travel with Kids Planner has a passport check, a jet-lag plan and packing lists by age.

One more for expecting parents: The Just-In-Case Binder ($12) is a 62-page fillable and printable binder for the important stuff (insurance, accounts, medical details, who to call), with a Google Sheets companion. Not a cuddly gift, but a useful one when a family is growing. See what's inside.
If there's a registry, use it first: the parents have often already picked a stroller and car seat, and two of the same is no fun to return. The smaller things here (a sound machine, a diaper backpack, the Frida kit) are safer picks when the registry is picked over.
For flights and trains, a small-fold stroller like the Stokke YOYO³, Mockingbird Travel Stroller or Nuna TRVL lx. The Doona X is an infant car seat with wheels, which is handy for taxis but outgrown in about a year. Our travel stroller guide compares them for cobbles, trains and plane cabins.
A stroller or the Ergobaby carrier ($219). The big-ticket picks here (the Single-to-Double, Nuna TRVL lx and Doona X) are $549 to $850, which is a lot for one person but reasonable split five ways.
They're what each retailer's own page showed on 23 October 2026. Holiday sales move prices up and down, sometimes daily, so the retailer's page is the final word. If something here looks wrong, it's probably changed since we checked.
Some are. If you buy through a product link we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. It doesn't change the price you pay or which products we pick, and nobody paid to be on these lists.
